Our Founder's Story
In January 2016, our founder Mohamed Ahmed lost his leg above the knee in an accident, a moment that transformed loss into a story of strength and hope. His determined recovery inspired the creation of FLDC (Amputee Hope) in May 2021, a movement empowering amputees to regain mobility, independence, and confidence.
He is currently Master’s Candidate in Prosthetics and Orthotics.

2025 Bush Fellow
Our Founder's Story
Since losing his leg in a 2016 car accident, Mohamed Ahmed has become a passionate advocate for amputee rights and equitable access to prosthetic care. Currently training as a prosthetist, Mohamed is committed to making advanced prosthetic technology accessible to underserved communities, particularly immigrants, refugees and people of color navigating the U.S. healthcare system.
Mohamed successfully advocated for a new Minnesota policy that ensures insurance covers a second “shower leg” prosthesis, and has raised over $20,000 for uninsured amputees to receive life-changing devices. He provides peer mentorship through Wiggle Your Toe and the Protez Foundation, and is working to establish a prosthetic clinic in Yemen through the Hope Project. Mohamed is recognized for his deep authenticity and unwavering responsiveness to those he serves, offering hope, strength and genuine care to individuals navigating profound challenges.
With the Bush Fellowship, Mohamed will complete his master’s degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics, expand his policy and advocacy skills and grow his impact at the intersection of healthcare, disability justice and immigrant leadership.
